I really do hate trying to talk to my stepmother about controversial topics. And it ranges from something simple like cosplay to actual incidents that are happening right now.
She finds it silly that I hate bad cosplay, and any kind of critique is an automatic jab at them. Let alone the fact that a good amount of cosplay is downright terrible, but can always be spruced up if you give it time. But to her, she sticks with the “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” quip, or “professionals should be the ones to critique, not bystanders”. Hate to say it, but the world is not all gumdrops and rainbows, and if you put yourself out there, you will be critiqued by everyone.
The next deal was with the whole abortion deal going on right now. Personally, I believe in it in extreme cases (i.e. rape, health issues, financial issues, etc.), and that it should be up to the woman to make the decision when it comes to her body. SM, on the other hand, isn’t really up for the whole idea, and believes that the man should have a say in it too, since technically, it is his potential child. While I may understand the “fairness” aspect of it, I do NOT agree with it. He does NOT have to bring the child into the world. He doe NOT have to go through with the excruciating pain that countless women before him have had to endure. He is NOT the one who may potentially die if the pregnancy does not go through as planned. The fact that the man feels he is entitled to make the choice for his “seed vessel” is completely abhorrent, and is very disrespectful to the woman.
The last discussion we had was with the whole Trayvon Martin deal, and Geraldo Rivera’s lovely response. She agrees with Rivera in the whole “don’t wear it if you don’t want to get shot”. I apologize, but WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. That entire thought process just confounds me, and makes me want to vomit. Victim-blaming a 17-year-old kid coming back from the grocery store based on what he was wearing. Soon we’ll jump back to victim-blaming rape victims because of how they dress too. How anyone can blame both sides of this ordeal with Zimmerman was armed with a gun, and Martin had a HOODIE. A fucking hoodie. Glad to know that his fashion choice was his downfall. The funniest thing is when Rivera tweets that his kids is ashamed of him for his “analysis”, SM just shrugs and says “the kid probably is too young to understand, or doesn’t really know what’s going on”. That response is just IGNORANT, in so many ways.
It’s just… I don’t understand how I can talk to this woman when she agrees half the times with everything these crazy wackadoons spout. It just gets so frustrating to handle sometimes >.>
